International Homeless Animal Day Today is a special day to recognize the important issue of homelessness for many animals world wide. To many it may seem overwhelming in how to help so many animals in need. With the effort of spay/neuter clinics, animal protectors and tourists reaching out to be the voice of the voiceless ones, we continue our work and have saved many from the streets. Lets remember the animals all year round. In memory of homeless animals we at The Aniplant Project would like to share a slideshow of the lucky ones that recieved help. Thank you to Nora Garcia President of Aniplant, Dr. Yohanky and Dr.Gladis and their team for all the work you have done in Cuba and continue to do. Of all the calls for help for endangered animals, yesterday we notice a dog that had been thrown into the sea at the Malecón. This dog had swam up the reefs and spent several days there and when we arrived we noticed she was also wounded. The sharp rocks get their name "dogtooth" and combined with the height the wall prevented her from getting out. The trap for her was sea front and behind her the high wall. Many dogs are thrown to their death at the Malecon, some drown, others who do not die from the sea , perish of thirst, or often hide in the drain pipes and perish at high tide. This was another case of this situation. With urgency we went there and miraculously we found the dog hiding in one of those drains she had poked her head out and thanks to the camera lens, we zoomed in and we spotted her. Immediately we seeked help and a carpenter joined the rescue. With great ease, he lowered himself over the short wall and cautiously made his way to the dog. The dog was shaking with fear and we had to win her confindence that we were their to help her. His wife joined in the rescue bringing the dog fresh water and a some food to coax the dog to come out which she eventually began to trust and made her way out. We were joined by other activists and together and on the wall once the dog was safe we applied tick product and also quickly begin to remove them with our bare hands. Most likely this was the obvious reason that they threw this dog into the sea. Cruelty repeated by those who know or are unable to remedy the problem with hygiene products. Blanquita is now the name given and is in our adoption program to try to find a family who will love and care for her. She receives food and fresh water, and of course the love and solidarity of those who work for their welfare. Blanquita stays with the family that recused her, the carpenter and his wife China, his son, and their five dogs. Blanquita follows her everywhere as she believes this is her saviour and hopefully this maybe her next family. The family dogs are also being kindly treated, and receiving the support and help of Aniplant. Nora was contacted by a news reporter from the United States wanting to do an interview about Aniplant. The reporter was very much into animal protection and during her stay had found a lame dog in Old Havana, she fed the dog and contacted Nora. They agreed that as soon as she seen the dog again they would go and get help for him. Unfortunately, they did not see him again as he moved from where he was or may have been collected. While looking for the dog in Havana she found another dog, so sick he was unable to move. He was extremely thin and barely able to drink water and would not eat very much if anything. She rushed him to a local state veterinary office and an unfortunate experience with an employee made it difficult so Nora called and tried to explain the circumstances with the dog. It was now 11 at night and the lady reporter could not bring the dog to where she was staying as it was not allowed. She decided to stay with the dog to look after him to prevent him from being hurt. Early that morning with help she and Nora arrived at Aniplant. The dog at this point could not move and was limp. They prepared a bed for him until the vet could see him. The news was not good and it was suggested that it was best to put him to sleep. Nora in her own words.. "I could not bring myself to make that decision. I always think you have to fight". Nora asked the Vet for some serum and every 3 hours they continued to give him this and drops of water in his mouth. It had been a very long day and night and the lady needed rest as she was leaving back to the United States. Nora continued working with the dog now giving him some honey and he began to savour it, this went on till dawn. Nora decided to try some meat which she let him smell it from her hand and he finally ate. The Vet now noticed the dog was eating so they gave him antibiotics and vitamins. This dog who could not move and with some love and care, finally rose to his feet. He now stands on his own and eats well .. 3 times a day. Happily he is now on the mend and the reporter is going to adopt him. In honor of the taxi driver who loves animals and also helped to bring this dog and lady to the Vet. He is named Cesar Jr. The day of Annie passing I knew this was just the beginning of my journey. My heart was broken yet i wanted to do more than just have the memories of her. I thought about all the other stray's that needed some kindness and compassion and how i can help. I reached out to Nora and wrote that in her travels if she should find a dog that needed a loving home to let me know. Nora wrote back to say that she has just rescued a dog within hours of our Annie passing. She was hesitant in telling me so soon after our loss but seeing that i was opening my heart to another creature in need. She began the story of her rescue.. Nora's letter: (Through Translator) Danielle dear, dear friend, are an extraordinary being, in the midst of so much pain over the loss of our Annie, you are able to open your heart and give the opportunity to another creature. I cry some, I am not weeping by nature, but I cried a lot and even cry for this major loss, for this creature that lived with me, who slept with me, ate out of my hand, used my chair, my bed, and that its tail was so happy, but now I cry different, I cry with great force to do more and more for those who like Annie, suffer from neglect and indifference, and now I'll tell you something that happened the same day that Annie died, and that was not going to share it with you so quickly, but your desire to help another pushes me to tell. As usual, I received a call and she told me there was a young, skinny dog bones, abandoned, hungry, thirsty, lying in the street where she parked, and she could not leave it there, if I had someone I could help her, I said immediately that I would seek someone nearby who can help her, Maria Julia, another angel who helps me, prepared food and water to leave with me immediately, that Pilar calls me and tells me she will come to my house with the dog,, in the parking which is a bit from "our office.", she came down and sat on the floor, on the sidewalk as the dog ate: ate food, drank water, very scared, gave her a tablet desparasitarla. I told Pilar the latest developments of Annie, and she died a few hours ago. We moved the dog to the headquarters of Aniplant she is sweet good, medium, and from the first moment we lost Annie, because our Annie is already a project, not a memory, it is a boost, an incentive to increase aid, support to so many suffering. I can't tell you really how amazing Nora is..it is so hard to explain and that is why I am sharing my personal letters from her with you. She has her angels as she calls them that work alongside in helping to end the suffering and indifferences on cuba's strays. Along with Nora's email was a few photos of the rescue. As you can see she was just skin and bones, but now she has a chance. I wrote back to say that i would take her. Now i can't tell you how handy translators are..but things do get lost in translation. Nora wrote again and i guess the translator was acting up .. because some how i thought from the first letter the dog was female., but during the second letter back from Nora it was a male. She was referring to the dog as "He" . She was asking me to name the dog so they can begin to familiarize him with his name. After a few days of thought i decided on the name 'Neo" so i responded back to Nora with the name. To add to this., i have been trying to learn a bit of spanish. I was already understanding the masculine and feminine nouns. Usually anything ending in "0" is masculine and "A" is feminine. I'm telling you this for a reason.. stay with me. LOL So Neo it is.. then i get a letter back.. is Neo female? and I being to think.. it ends in 'O" she must know its a male name. I keep reading back through her emails.. then she writes "es perrita no perrito." So Neo is now Nia~ .. yes it is a girl.. LOL.. after all the sadness it was so good to have a laugh over something that seemed so simple. Here are a few more photo's of "Nia" at Aniplant Headquarters Once Nia puts on enough weight she will be flying to Toronto to meet her new family.
